Operations Engineer
Core Work – Principal Function of Role
The Operations Engineer primarily functions as a technical resource and support role leveraging knowledge and technical skills related to chemistry and engineering to ensure that assigned production units are operating safely as designed and permitted with a continuous improvement mindset.
Accountabilities – Provide leadership to:
Endure that assigned production units are operating as designed (production rate, quality, raw material utilizations)
Support the continuous improvement of assigned production units
Ensure all Environmental and PSM obligations are fulfilled for assigned production units
Support site-wide HS&E and continuous improvement initiatives
Key Activities and Responsibilities
Learn the process design, constraints/limitations, regulatory and permit conditions, common causes of process upsets, and past/present/future improvement plans to function as the process expert for assigned production units
Play a support role for capital projects for assigned unit
Provide primary support to resolve process upsets to reach production targets and minimize waste
Track daily production volumes and downtime in site OEE system
Track raw material utilizations, verify accuracy of utilization standards, and provide technical support to ensure that production units are performing to standards.
Participate on Continuous Improvement Teams and Capital Projects teams, providing guidance and support and approving decisions and MOCs for new processes and equipment
Generate MOCs and ensure they progress to completion in a timely manner
Generate Incident Reports, lead and/or participate in investigations/RCFAs, help generate effective technical corrective actions, and ensure timely completion of actions and reports
Manage Process Safety Information (P&IDs, Critical-Safety-Systems, Interlocks)
Ensure compliance with environmental regulation and permit requirements (DEQ reportable quantities, Point Source Emissions limits, Process Safety Incident threshold quantities) and perform release calculations as needed
Key Performance Indicators
Units achieve monthly production targets at designed raw material utilizations within set quality specifications, and all final product shipments leave the plant on schedule
Zero non-conformances of PSM requirements and minimal MOCs, incident reports, and corrective actions > 1 year old
Assigned units realize production rate, reliability, cost, and quality improvements that impact overall profitability
Essential Qualifications
B.S. or higher degree in Chemical Engineering or Mechanical preferred
Experience in manufacturing facility (Chemical Industry preferred)
Strong problem-solving skills and technical ability
Strong time management, organization, interpersonal, and communication skills
Critical Partnerships
Area and Shift Supervisors – Collaborate on resolution of process upsets, generation/implementation of process improvements (technical focus), and support and approval of equipment preparation effectiveness for maintenance
Technical Advisor – Consult for additional assistance/support for resolution of process upsets and generation/implementation of process improvement ideas
Product Managers – Collaborate with business team to communicate production needs and challenges
Operations Analyst – Collaborate to understand and address raw material utilization issues
